In Genesis1verses6-8 God made the firmament, or heavens

Here is what Genesis1verses6-8 say:

6 And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters. 7 And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so. 8 And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.

Comments about other translations:

The word translated firmament in the KJV is often translated elsewhere as expanse, which seems a literal meaning of the Hebrew.

Where the KJV says Heaven the Amplified Bible says Heavens. The NIV says ”sky”, but see commentary below – as that seems an unacceptably narrow interpretation/translation.

Commentary on the meaning:

The derivation of firmament or expanse in the original Hebrew seems to mean that it is something pounded or drawn out – such as would occur, for example, if a piece of copper, gold, or other malleable metal was pounded out with a hammer - or if clay was drawn out to be thinner but cover a larger area. –That is a figurative (or possibly very literal!) description of God forming the firmament/expanse/heavens above the earth.

The firmament is a HUGELY important topic. Let’s look at it closer:

The Bible speaks of the third heaven in 2 Corinthians 12:2. –Although I cannot “prove” it, apparently the sky (or earth’s atmosphere) is the first heaven. Next is the vastness of what we call outer space. The third heaven refers to where God’s throne is. (Whether it is part of the universe or beyond, I am not sure – but it apparently is beyond it.)

The firmament is at least the outer space, and it is much more than we have been led to believe in the last 100 or 200 years. People used to believe in an aether (or, ether) that filled space. Scientific experiments and theories of the late 1800’s and early 1900’s were tried in an attempt to “do away with” the ether. We have been told they proved there is no such thing as the ether, but that is not the truth at all. Rather, deliberate pro-evolution so-called science has cleverly tricked the majority of humanity into believing false theories – all for the purpose of getting people to disbelieve the Bible. (I offer no proof of that here, but you can research it on other sites if you wish.)

Slowly, some scientists who are willing to face the truth are coming to understand how amazing the universe is. There is far more energy in it than mankind can grasp! –And why not? Though in one sense God created the universe from “nothing”, that is probably NOT the correct way to try to explain things. Hebrews 11:3 says Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear. The NIV says universe instead of worlds.

Referring to God the Son, Jesus Christ (as previous verses are clear on), Colossians 1:16 and 17 say For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him and for him: 17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. That final word, consist in the KJV is translated "hold together” in the NASB and the NIV.

It is the Spirit of God that carried out creation, and (as impossible as it is for our minds to fully grasp) His Spirit must continue to sustain everything or it would cease to exist!

David asked in Psalm 139:7 and 8 Whither shall I go from thy spirit? Or whither shall I flee from thy presence? 8 If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold thou art there.

“Outer space” is not empty at all, but rather it is filled with ether, which is dense and has experimentally documented effects on light.

For many years I thought that Genesis 1:7 was speaking only about the sky or earth atmosphere – that the waters below it were obviously those visible on lakes, oceans, rivers, etc. (and below ground), and that those “above” were in the clouds. But that is not what the Bible says!

The firmament or expanse is called the Heavens. It is not "empty space", but rather it is filled with ether. And it was stretched out like a canopy around the earth. (And, yes – at least some people in the time of the Old Testament understood that the earth was shaped approximately like a sphere.)

The firmament also has strength/rigidity at an upper level, with water beyond that! (And some Bible-believing Christians who are also scientists believe that the water atop the firmament accounts for light patterns as seen from earth that mean there are actually far fewer stars than most astronomers would have us believe. –And that the universe is much smaller than we have been led to believe!)
